Icahn vs. Halle: When Billionaires Collide, the Numbers Don't Always Add Up

Carl Icahn seems to embrace publicity. It is in the best interest of Icahn Enterprises LLC, the company that is bidding on Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack.

Bruce Halle, who oversees Discount Tire, the largest independent tire chain in the U.S., rarely seeks out publicity. Instead, he lets others take credit and tends to stay out of the limelight.

Even when he won the Modern Tire Dealer Tire Dealer of the Year Award in 2014, he couldn't stop talking about everyone else in his organization.

So when Forbes published its 2015 Forbes 400 list, Halle probably said nothing about his ranking, which was based on the magazine's estimates.

However, one aspect of the ranking rankled Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich, who couldn't let the slight slight go. "How could Icahn rank ahead of Halle in such an important, informative category?" he says.
