Tire Mold Problem Prompts Triangle Recall

Posted on September 6, 2017

Triangle Tire USA is recalling certain Triangle TR643 tires in size ST225/75R15. A protruding screw in one tire mold may have punched a hole in the space where the sidewall and tread meet.

The company says the recall may affect 288 tires.

The defect is limited to tires made with one specific mold, No. 13HM. The tires bear the DOT code of 2VMC 0517 and 2VMC 0617. Triangle says the curing mold had a screw that protruded through the mold and into the tires made with the mold. The company says the mold was used from Feb. 3 to Feb. 9, 2017. (Tires with DOT numbers of 2VMC 1817 or later were not manufactured with the 13HM mold.)

Triangle says it’s possible none of the tires was actually sold by a dealer or distributor to an owner or purchaser “because the failulre to inflate with the audible sound of escaping air is so noticeable upon installation.”

Triangle will notify owners, and dealers will replace the tires free of charge. The recall is expected to begin Sept. 15, 2017. Owners may contact Triangle customer service at 1-615-610-5050.

Owners also may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. The NHTSA campaign number is 17T014000.
