Nexen Expands Size Range of Roadian MTX

Nexen Tire America Inc. has added 33-, 35- and 37-inch sizes preferred by many extreme off-road enthusiasts to the Roadian MTX Mud Terrain Xtreme tire lineup.

The Roadian MTX was released in smaller sizes at the beginning of 2017. “The 33s, 35s and 37s just reached the ports a couple of weeks ago and are now available nationwide,” says Kyle Roberts, Nexen’s senior director of marketing.

The Roadian MTX marked Nexen’s entry into the hardcore off-road market when it was introduced at the 2017 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show.

Nexen turned its relatively late arrival to the mud-terrain segment to its advantage, according to Roberts. “We were able to take the best of the tires that were out there and fill the gaps that consumers were looking for.”

For example, consumers want to be able to customize a tire’s appearance, according to Roberts. To fill that gap, the Roadian MTX’s distinctive dual sidewalls offer two looks in the same tire. Consumers have the option to choose the “Beast” or “Machine” designs.

The new Roadian MTX also fills a gap for functioning tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors on large tires. The F load range on all flotation sizes and maximum air pressure of 80 pounds per square inch enables consumers to keep the TPMS manufacturer settings while providing increased towing and higher load capacity. The tire also features:

  • 3-ply sidewall protection for better stability and durability when hauling heavy loads and dealing with harsh off-road terrain;
  • burly lugs for maximum grip, aggressive traction and complete control;
  • patented, optimized block positions which reduce tire noise when transitioning from mud trails to asphalt streets;
  • reinforced rubber belt that delivers exceptional load-bearing durability over a range of applications; and
  • rim protector bar on sizes 20 inches and up to keep prized rims safe from curb-rub or rock abrasion.

Roberts says the Roadian MTX is a hybrid all terrain and mud tire that performs well in all extreme off-road and highway conditions. Consumers like the option to choose from two sidewall designs, and they are surprised at the tire’s quietness on the highway and its actual performance in extreme conditions.

“Sand, mud, gravel, rock crawling and snow – the Roadian MTX does well in all of those environments,” says Roberts. “Don’t underestimate the tire because Nexen is not known for off-road. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with how the Roadian MTX performs alongside the leaders of this segment.”

Nexen brought dealers, distributors and media to Big Bear Lake in Southern California to demonstrate the Roadian MTX’s rock crawling capabilities and to raise awareness of the expanded size range. The tires were tested on the rocky terrain of the Gold Mountain 4x4 trail in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Demand for the Roadian MTX far exceeds Nexen’s original projections, according to John Hagan, executive vice president of sales. Dealers initially resisted the manufacturer's suggested retail pricing, which starts $205. “They were worried it would be priced wrong, but customers are buying them because of the design, and they are selling out,” says Hagan.

The MTX is priced approximately 10 points below the Toyo Open Country M/T, BFGoodrich T/A KO2 and just above the Falken WildPeak M/T. “The testing showed the MTX could perform right along with the Tier 1, so we priced it right below BFGoodrich and Toyo,” says Hagan.
