Wanted: Tire Industry Leaders of the Future

There’s plenty to be said about the institutional knowledge of our industry’s long-time leaders. But more and more, young people are on the front lines pushing the tire industry into the future. Modern Tire Dealer is on the hunt for those young trailblazers.

Maliyah Ramsey is a high school junior in Akron, Ohio, studying automotive technology at East Community Learning Center. Akron Public Schools is creating specific career-minded academies at each of its high schools, and it’s received a boost from Bridgestone Americas Inc. The tire maker sponsors the Bridgestone Academy of Applied Engineering and Technology, which includes an automotive curriculum, as well as electrical engineering, interactive media and welding classes.

No Rest for Point S Dealers After Successful 2017

The 212 stores in Tire Factory Inc.’s network sold 6.5% more tires in 2017 than in 2016, and they increased overall sales by 8%. There was improvement in same-store sales — dealers who have rebranded to the Point S banner increased sales by 5.5%, and those who haven’t were up 3.5%.

After another tire dealer closed in Baldwin City, Kan., Bill Leach bought the building and opened his second location, Mr. Tire of Baldwin. Leach plans to open three or four more locations in eastern Kansas. “At this point anything else I would build would be a Mr. Tire.”

Program Groups Help Dealers Focus on Selling

Bill Leach had wanted to expand beyond his one-store tire business in Paola, Kan., for some time. So when he finally found the perfect location for a second store, about 30 miles away in Baldwin City, Kan., he was ready to roll. And one decision at least was an easy one.

The retail business may be the foundation, but Point S Battle Mountain Tire and Auto Service wants to expand its commercial footprint. That means hauling tires to its customers’ locations or work sites is a regular task.

Michelin North America Inc. is targeting a fast-rising segment of the truck tire industry with its new Michelin X Multi D, a regional drive-position tire designed for trucks and fleets making shorter, more regional urban hauls.

M/T Tires are Having a Moment: Consumer Demand Is Blurring the Lines

Of the 19 tire manufacturers who responded to our questions, 11 have introduced new M/T tires since 2015. And at least three more new M/T tires are expected to be unveiled in the next 24 months. Nick Gutierrez, sales manager for Sentury Tire Americas, refers to it as a “flash flood.”
