Silverstone set for Cooper Tires British F3 spectacular

May 22, 2014

The Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Series rolls into Silverstone this weekend for the second meeting of the 2014 Championship.

The home of British motorsport, Silverstone is a firm favourite amongst drivers and teams alike and, racing alongside the Blancpain Endurance Series, the May Bank Holiday event provides an excellent platform for up-and-coming racers in the British F3 Championship.

Early season form suggests that Fortec Motorsports will be the team to beat at the Northamptonshire circuit. The Daventry-based outfit took three wins from three at Rockingham for the season opener, with Sam MacLeod, who signed a one-off deal with the squad, taking two wins and Martin Cao cleaning up for the squad in race three.

For Silverstone, Fortec welcomes reigning German Formula Three Champion, Marvin Kirchhofer. The 20-year-old, who is also contesting a full season in the GP3 Series, will race alongside Martin Cao and Matt Rao, as he replaces Sam MacLeod at the squad.

Meanwhile, Double R Racing is also setting its sights on more silverware for the second meeting of 2014. Twice a podium finisher at Rockingham, Andy Chang is hoping for more success at Silverstone this weekend. The Macanese driver lies third in the drivers’ standings, just 10 points adrift of the championship lead, so there are plenty of opportunities for progress over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Fellow F3 rookie, Camren Kaminsky, also impressed on his debut, bagging three top-four finishes at Rockingham and with a strong track record at Silverstone, the Double R Racing team is confident of another podium haul this weekend.

Looking ahead to the Silverstone weekend, Sarah McRoberts, Marketing Communications Manager for Cooper Tire Europe underlined the significance of racing at Silverstone: “Silverstone is a fantastic venue that is steeped in history, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most popular events on the British F3 calendar. A lot of the drivers seemed closely matched at Rockingham for the series opener, so we’re anticipating more close action this weekend and it’s great to have Marvin Kirchhofer joining the series for the weekend.

“In terms of tires, the drivers have really already faced the toughest circuit already – Rockingham is particularly harsh on tire wear, so it’s likely that most drivers will find tire management less challenging.”

The second meeting of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Series will take place at Silverstone over the weekend of May 24-25. Races one and two will be held on Saturday, with the final race of the weekend due to take place on Sunday afternoon.
