Feds ask for sidewall labeling clarification

June 8, 2001

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is asking the International Tire & Rubber Association (ITRA) to further explain its position on tire sidewall labeling.

ITRA says most current tire sidewall labeling practices are sufficient.

In addition, the Louisville, Ky.-based organization has reaffirmed its position that ply cord material and belt construction information is necessary on sidewalls to help prevent zipper explosions, enhance the tire repair process and other issues.

"We appreciate the opportunity to submit further comments that support our opposition to removing information from a tire sidewall," says ITRA Executive Director Marvin Bozarth.
