MTD Facts Issue: Does a retread cost too much?

Last year was a good one for truck tire retreading. There was not only an uptick in the number of retreaded truck tires, but also an increase in the average price per retread.

We break down the $10 billion truck and retreaded truck tire market in the 2014 Modern Tire Dealer Facts Issue. While replacement truck tire shipments were down 1.8%, the number of truck tires retreaded was up 100,000 units. Here is a quick list of some of the 2013 stats.

No. of new truck tires shipped: 15.7 million

Avg. cost of a new replacement truck tire: $401.27

No. of retreads produced: 14.9 million

Avg. cost per retread: $250.24

Avg. cost of casing: $78.61.

Replacement truck tire market value: $6.3 billion

Retreaded truck tire market value: $3.7 billion.

The price gap between a new truck tire and a retread was nearly $200 in 2012. It was close to $150 last year.
