Michelin Launches Next-Generation Pilot Sport

July 1, 2020

Michelin North America Inc. has introduced its latest ultra-high performance all-season tire, the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4, which is currently available in 105 sizes. “The tire is designed to provide year-round performance and give drivers ultimate control in any moment, in any season,” say Michelin officials.

“Michelin’s previous all-season ultra-high-performance tire broke the performance barrier between summer tires and all-season tires. The latest generation improves on that performance with 4% better dry braking, 5% better wet braking and 10% more snow traction.”

The tire features an asymmetric tread pattern, which includes more rubber on the outer shoulder to help deliver enhanced lateral dry grip; a race-inspired tread compound “engineered with maximum levels of silica to grip slick pavement;” and a large rain groove that evacuates water from under the tire to prevent hydroplaning.

It also contains Michelin’s 360-Degree Variable Sipe Technology, which consists of full-depth and interlocking sipes to provide improved traction in rain and snow, and the company’s Dynamic Response Technology, which ensures forces and temperatures are distributed evenly for a longer tread wear life.

“We built this tire for passionate drivers who need their vehicles to perform in wet, dry or even cold, snowy conditions,” says Michelin Brand Director Matthew Cabe. “This tire covers 85% of the market and the new generation includes sizes for the most popular high-performance vehicles being sold today.”

Target vehicles include the Alfa Romeo Giulia; Audi Q7, A8 and S4; BMW X5; Chevrolet Corvette C8; Lexus IS; Mercedes GLC and AMG C Class; Range Rover Sport; Tesla Model X and S; Volvo XC90 and XC60; and Volkswagen GTI.

Thirty-one of the Pilot Sport All-Season 4’s total number of sizes fit “larger rim sizes for more coverage of the SUV/CUV market,” according to Michelin officials. An additional 46 sizes will be available in July 2021.
