Tire Industry Legend Ken Towery Dies

Ken Towery, founder of Ken Towery AutoCare SuperCenters, died on March 13 at the age of 83.

Born in Berea, Ky., and a longtime Louisville, Ky., resident, Towery worked for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. for 13 years before opening his own tire dealership in 1971.

Under his direction, Ken Towery AutoCare SuperCenters expanded to 30 locations throughout Kentucky and Indiana, becoming one of the largest, most respected tire dealerships in the region.

A longtime member of several tire manufacturer dealer advisory councils and the National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association’s executive committee, he was named MTD’s Tire Dealer of the Year in 2008 for his extraordinary business acumen. He also contributed time and resources to a number of charitable organizations throughout his life.

Preceded by his parents and his late wife, Joyce Towery, he is survived by his wife of 17 years, Joanne; his daughter, Lorea Ware (Donald); his son, Kris Towery (Sarah); stepson Michael Plichta (Nicole); grandsons Trey, Chandler, Colin, Asher and Benjamin; and granddaughters Madison, Katelyn and Suzanna.

Floral tributes and gifts may be sent to Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Rd., East Louisville, Ky. Donations also may be made in his memory to the Southern Baptist Seminary, 2825 Lexington Rd., Louisville, Ky., 40280.
