Pirelli's 2018 Calendar Revisits a Literary Classic

Nov. 14, 2017

The 45th edition of the Pirelli calendar revisits the classic “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” through the camera lens of British photographer Tim Walker.

The 2018 calendar features 18 protagonists from the worlds of fashion, movies, music, and social activism.

“Alice has been told so many times,” Walker said, “and I think I wanted to go back to the genesis of the imagination behind Lewis Carroll so that you could tell it from the very beginning again. I wanted to find a different and original angle.”

Walker’s angle involved photographing an all-black cast, the second time this has occurred in Pirelli Calendar history, after the English photographer Terence Donovan portrayed five women, including Naomi Campbell, in 1987.

Campbell, the British supermodel and actress, features in her fourth Calendar, explaining that she has “done it for four decades,” with each Calendar being “all so different, but all so iconic.” Joining her are Australian model Adut Akech, Ghanaian-British fashion model and feminist activist Adwoa Aboah, Senegalese-German model Alpha Dia, Beninese-American actor and activist Djimon Hounsou, South Sudanese-Australian model Duckie Thot, Gambian women’s rights activist Jaha Dukureh, British model King Owusu, American rapper and singer Lil Yachty, Mexican-Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, American actor, television personality and singer/songwriter RuPaul, American actress Sasha Lane, American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, record producer and entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs, American model Slick Woods, South African model and lawyer Thando Hopa, American actress, comedian, author and television host Whoopi Goldberg, British model Wilson Oryema and British fashion stylist, designer and singer Zoe Bedeaux.
