Time to Take Sides: Mechanics' Union Vs. New Car Dealers

Sept. 6, 2017

The negotiations on a new Standard Automotive Agreement between the New Car Dealers Committee (NCDC) and Automobile Mechanics' Local 701 are getting nasty, with both parties digging in their heels. Some 2,000 members of the union have been on strike for more than a month, and the number appears to be growing, with some members not covered by the agreement joining the picket line. At least one newspaper report says the car dealers are suffering.

The car dealers believe a technician's base salary of more than $62,000, "regardless of productivity," is fair. The union appears to believe otherwise.

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich found the standoff intriguing. In his latest blog, he lists and analyzes the key issues, which, as you might have guessed, are predominantly about money.

What is going on? And when will it end? To find out, check out the blog, "Chicago Union on Strike, Car Dealers on Hold." And get ready for plenty of finger-pointing.
