Heafner exits Arizona market

Feb. 23, 2001

The Heafner Group has sold its 10 retail outlets in the Phoenix, Ariz., area to an undisclosed buyer.

The stores comprised Heafner's total Arizona retail presence. "It's a matter of consolidating our resources," says a company spokesman.

Heafner has no future plans for the Arizona market. "That was never part of our strategy. Our retail stores are centered in California, with the exception of some stores in the Midwest."

Heafner picked up the Arizona outlets, which originally operated under the Tires Outlet banner, when it bought San Jose, Calif.-based Competition Parts Warehouse (CPW) in May 1998. "CPW owned them," says the spokesman.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based company is the fourth largest independent retail tire chain in North America with more than $1 billion in annual sales, according to Modern Tire Dealer data.
