Michelin prepares for farm tire production in U.S.

Feb. 15, 2001

Michelin North America Inc. may soon be making more than earthmover tires at its three-year-old off-the-road (OTR) tire plant in Lexington, S.C.

Michelin is building a farm tire production facility next to the Lexington factory that will make Michelin-brand units in a limited number of sizes, according to sources close to the project. Michelin had no comment.

John Deere now offers Michelin brand farm tires as original equipment options and requires its OE suppliers to manufacture a percentage of their products in the United States. There is no word on whether BFGoodrich brand farm tires will be built in Lexington, as well.

The Lexington facility can manufacture 200 large earthmover tires per day, according to Modern Tire Dealer statistics.
