Kumho runs out of tires for the Dodge Journey

July 19, 2011

The Dodge Journey is one popular car. So popular that Kumho Tire U.S.A. Inc. has been unable to keep up with the demand at the replacement level.

Kumho's Solus KH16 original equipment tire first appeared on the 2009 model year Dodge Journey. The size -- 225/55R19 -- was, and still is, unique to the OE and replacement markets. The same tire is OE on the 2010 and 2011 models, as well.

Vehicle owners in need of tires are having a hard time getting them. According to David Koh, Kumho's communications manager, Chrysler Group LLC and Kumho got caught off-guard by the volume.

In a joint statement between Kumho and Chrysler, both parties said help is on the way.

"Chrysler Group is aware that there has been an issue with the supply of replacement tires for the Dodge Journey. Strong sales of the Journey created greater demand for replacement tires than Kumho Tire U.S.A.’s existing production capacity could supply, resulting in a shortage.

"Working in cooperation with Chrysler Group, Kumho Tire U.S.A. has responded by:

1. increasing its production capacity,

2. adding new building equipment and

3. expanding production to multiple factories.

"As a result of these actions, the supply of tires that are original equipment on the Dodge Journey is steadily increasing. By the end of July 2011, it is expected that the backlog of replacement tire orders for the Dodge Journey will be cleared and the ongoing supply will meet demand."
