Goodyear outlets, blimp support Tire Safety Week

June 4, 2011

As part of National Tire Safety Week, June 5-11, 2011, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is urging drivers to make sure their tires are properly inflated. A recent study by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) reveals 85% of drivers do not properly check their tire inflation pressure.

National Tire Safety Week is a time to remind drivers of the simple steps they can take to ensure their tires are safe and in good working condition.

Tire dealers are in a good position to educate customers about proper tire inflation. Improper tire pressure can lead to a multitude of problems – from uneven and accelerated wear, to structural damage. With temperatures rising and many families planning for vacation travel, attention to tire care and maintenance should be heightened, according to Goodyear officials.

"Checking tires for proper inflation and tread condition is one of the most critical – and easiest – maintenance procedures for a consumer," says Gary Medalis, general manager, Goodyear brand. "It doesn't take much time or sophisticated equipment. Drivers can easily check their tires themselves, or any of our retail outlets would be happy to assist them."

Goodyear recommends motorists check their tire inflation at least monthly and before long trips. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the owner's manual, not the maximum limit stamped on a tire sidewall.

Caring for tires can also leave more money in a consumer's pocket. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, proper inflation pressure can improve vehicle fuel economy by 3.3%, saving up to 12 cents a gallon at the pump.

Among other initiatives from Goodyear during National Tire Safety Week are these:

Goodyear outlets will distribute the RMA's "Be Tire Smart, Play Your PART" consumer booklets, which stress the importance of proper tire care.

On www.goodyear.com, visitors will find extensive information on tire care, product selection and more.

With their lighted message boards, Goodyear's blimps continue to spread the tire care message while in flight, urging consumers on the ground to check tire pressure and tread wear.
