Continental wants to grow in Mount Vernon, Ill.

Continental Tire the Americas LLC plans to expand its tire manufacturing plant in Mount Vernon, Ill.

The Fort Mill, S.C.-based tire manufacturer recently was granted two building permits that will add as many as 350 jobs to the plant’s workforce. In a related move, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation that will give the company a tax break.

Continental’s Mount Vernon facility has the capacity to produce 40,500 tires a day, according to the 2011 Modern Tire Dealer Facts Issue. The tire capacity breaks out as follows:

Passenger -- 28,000.

Light truck -- 8,000.

Truck -- 4,500.

Continental will reveal its plans for the plant in more detail on Thursday, May 12. MTD will be in Mount Vernon to report on the event.
