McCarthy Tire purchases former Merchant's commercial outlets

May 1, 2003

McCarthy Tire Service, based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., has purchased two commercial outlets and a Bandag retread plant from TBC Corp. TBC obtained the outlets as part of its recent purchase of Merchant's Inc.

The two commercial outlets are located in Manassas, Va., and Landover, Md., respectively. The retread plant also is located in Manassas.

TBC was a willing seller, according to President John McCarthy Jr. The purchase "increases our service capability in Maryland and northern Virginia." McCarthy Tire also has a location in Sterling, Va., 35 miles from the Manassas store.

McCarthy Tire will merge its Hyattsville, Md., outlet into the nearby Landover location, leaving the company with 22 commercial stores.

Prior to the purchase, McCarthy Tire was the 21st largest retreader in the U.S., according to Modern Tire Dealer. The new plant gives the company three Bandag shops producing an estimated 750 truck tire retreads a day.

TBC finalized its purchase of Merchant's in early April. All but two of the 112 stores were retail operations.
