SEMA Show, pre-show: TIA wants to work with NHTSA on consumer program

Nov. 3, 2008

At its annual membership meeting, the Tire Industry Association (TIA) resolved to help the government develop a consumer information program.

The meeting was held the day before the start of Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nev.

The official resolution reads as follows.

Whereas H.R. 6, the Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection and Energy Efficient Act of 2007, states that "... the Secretary of Transportation shall... promulgate rules establishing a national tire fuel efficiency consumer information program for tires... to educate consumers about the effect of tires on automobile fuel efficiency... the rulemaking shall include... (D) a national tire maintenance consumer education program including information on tire pressure, alignment, rotation and tread wear to maximize fuel efficiency...," and

Whereas this legislation echoes the Tire Industry Association's own desire to educate to the public on a national campaign basis, and

Whereas the industry has held numerous internal discussions but has not been able to reach consensus as to the how to achieve this goal, and

Whereas there may now be an opportunity to overcome the past disagreements,

Now, therefore, let it be resolved by the Tire Industry Association meeting on this third day of November, 2008, in General Assembly, that the association will work with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) towards the development of said consumer information program to ensure the association's role in the dissemination of the critical information.
