Market conditions force Michelin to curb production at BFG plants

Oct. 27, 2008

Michelin North America Inc. will curb consumer tire production for a period of eight weeks at three of its domestic plants beginning Nov. 1.

The affected passenger and light truck tire manufacturing facilities -- located in Opelika and Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Fort Wayne, Ind. -- are part of the company's BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing division.

According to Michelin, the decision was made because "the economic downturn continues to affect the demand for tires in both the replacement and original equipment markets."

The company adds that eligible employees will receive state unemployment benefits, as well as a supplement from Michelin under the terms of the labor agreement.
