Longtime tire industry veteran Jeff Zegans of Hewlett, N.Y., died on May 29, 2015, after a long, brave battle fighting to overcome illness and sickness resulting from a motorcycle accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). He was 67.
Born Nov. 24, 1947, in Brooklyn, Zegans grew up in Rockville Center, and moved to Hewlett to raise his family. His career in the tire business began in 1972 with Ganin Tire Co. Inc., where he helped build and continue the success of the late Saul Ganin. Most recently, he headed up the online wholesaling division for Mavis Tire Supply.
He was known by many as the "Zeganman," and had "a smile and personality that could light up a room and make everyone around him happy," according to his son, Michael. "He spent over 40 years in the tire business and had countless relationships and friendships with many in the industry."
Zegans loved all sports, but he followed the N.Y. Jets, N.Y. Mets and Albany Lacrosse teams with passion. He also enjoyed golf and his Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He is is survived by his wife of 44 years, Terry Zegans; sons Michael, Brian and Jason Zegans; grandson Tyler Zegans; daughter-in-law Daniella Zegans and soon-to-be daughter-in-law Lindsay Charles.
"He was a great man, loving husband, father, brother, and 'pop pop,' and he will never be forgotten," says Michael.
