Perfect Equipment Turns 80

May 14, 2019

In its early years, Perfect Equipment focused wholly on a single product — the wheel weight — for a single market — the U.S. Eighty years after its founding, the brand has grown into a diversified product line sold in 35 countries around the world.

Wegmann automotive GmbH, which acquired the Perfect Equipment brand in 2005, is celebrating the brand's 80th anniversary.

Perfect Equipment was founded on Aug. 31, 1939, in Kokomo, Ind., by a young engineer, William P. Smissen. His company dominated the U.S. market in less than 20 years because it concentrated on perfecting the wheel weight. Over the last decade Wegmann has helped the brand diversify and expand. Perfect Equipment offers balancing solutions for passenger cars, light trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, plus tire valves, tire pressure monitoring systems, tools and other wheel and tire accessories.

Wegmann automotive USA Inc. CEO and President Jeff Waechter says, “It is rare to find a brand that has as longstanding a tradition of manufacturing excellence and customer loyalty as Perfect Equipment. Decades of dedicated employees that have provided attention to detail and unmatched customer service is why we are able to celebrate this eighty-year milestone. Wegmann automotive is very proud of the Perfect Equipment brand and looks forward to continuing the traditions of success well into the future.”

The brand's North American headquarters, in Murfreesboro, Tenn., are also home to a manufacturing and distribution facility that produces millions of wheel weights per week and employs more than 250 full-time workers. There's also a distribution facility in Phoenix, Ariz., plus additional manufacturing facilities in Brazil, China and Germany.
