California wholesaler says it hasn't sold Chinese tires

July 5, 2007

Carlsbad, Calif.-based K&D Tire Wholesalers has not sold any of the Chinese-made light truck tires currently under scrutiny, says company CEO Dan Marsh.

In a June 11 letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Foreign Tire Sales Inc. (FTS), the Union, N.J.-based importer that has been ordered to recall the tires, said K&D Tire Wholesalers "may have imported/sold tires of similar construction."

FTS intends to recall up to 450,000 light truck radials it sourced from Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd., starting July 16.

Hangzhou manufactured the tires between mid-2002 and mid-2006 under the names Westlake, Compass and YKS.

Marsh told moderntiredealer.com that his company "never purchased any of the tires involved. We get offers on Chinese tires all day long, but I don't recall offering these."

He says K&D Tire carries major brand tires like Goodyear, Bridgestone and others.

NHTSA has ordered FTS to recall the tires in question.
