Senate plans hearing on Chinese manufactured products -- including tires

July 4, 2007

The United States Senate Commerce Committee's Interstate Commerce, Trade and Tourism Subcommittee has scheduled a hearing on Chinese product safety for July 18, 2007. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) chairs the subcommittee.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Administrator Nicole Nason will testify on the recent Foreign Tire Sales Inc./Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd. tire situation.

Additional government witnesses tentatively scheduled include representatives of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Food and Drug Administration and a Seafood Inspection person.

Foreign Tire Sales has submitted a remedy plan to NHTSA for review and hopes to officially start recalling up to 450,000 defective Chinese-made light truck tires on July 16.
