Tire aging: Are 12-year-old tires too old?

Sept. 9, 2013

The tire aging issue has yet to be settled. Should there be a time stamp on the tires? Should they be replaced every six years? 10 years?

That is the dilemma faced by Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich, whose wife purchased a 2001 Pontiac Firebird -- with the original tires still on it.

The tires appear in good shape and have plenty of tread left (the car has only been driven 32,000 miles). Does the car need new tires?

Ulrich talks about the pros and cons in his latest blog, "Tire aging issue hits home: Should I replace 12-year-old tires?" And there's a cameo by our industry's "favorite" trial lawyer, Sean Kane!
