Wal-Mart gives tires the brush-off

May 16, 2013

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. posted $17 billion in net income from Feb. 1, 2012, to Jan. 31, 2013, its most recent fiscal year. Its income-to-sales ratio was 3.6% -- very respectable for a mass merchandiser.

Because the company sells tires at some 3,700 outlets, you would think the performance of its Tire & Lube Express outlets would be important to the company. Not once, however, are tires mentioned in its 2013 annual report.

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich found that hard to believe. But it's true.
