Unsafe used tire bill passes Texas Senate

April 16, 2013

The Texas Senate passed SB 459 yesterday with a 29-1 vote. One senator, Sen. Glenn Hegar (R-Katy) was absent and did not vote on the bill to prohibit the sale of unsafe used tires.

Today the Texas House Environmental Regulation Committee will hear HB 3783, a companion bill to SB 459. Tracey Norberg, senior vice president for the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), will testify in favor of the measure.

Similar legislation is making its way through the Florida House and Senate. The Florida Senate Agriculture Committee passed SB 1588, a bill to prohibit the sale of unsafe used tires, on April 9, 2013.

The RMA says the Florida bill unanimously passed the Commerce & Tourism and Agriculture committees. It also has been referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee and should it pass there, it will be eligible for consideration by the full senate.

In the Florida House, HB 485, a companion to SB 1588, will likely be considered by the House Regulatory Affairs Committee next week. It has already been passed unanimously by a subcommittee.
