China asks WTO to reassess consumer tire tariff

Dec. 22, 2009

China has asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) to form a panel "to decide the legitimacy of punitive U.S. tariffs imposed on Chinese-made auto tires," according to reports.

The request was made at a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body.

The White House imposed a 35% tariff on certain Chinese-built passenger and light truck tires in late September.

The Chinese government claims the tariff "is a compromise to the pessure of domestic protectionism interests." However, the WTO was unable to establish a panel "because of an objection from the U.S."
