Toyo wins back-to-back SCCA Solo National Championships

Sept. 18, 2009

The Toyo Proxes R1R extreme performance tire was once again on the Street Touring (ST) class champion car at the SCCA Solo National Championships.  Of significant note, is the fact that the back-to-back championship came in the first two seasons that Toyo Tires has been involved with SCCA Solo and ProSolo competition in Street Touring.

Bill Bounds, co-driver for Team Toyo’s own Tim Smith, piloted Smith’s Proxes R1R-equipped 1989 Honda Civic Si to a championship win at the Lincoln Airpark located in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Smith, from Atlanta, Georgia, won the 2009 SCCA Solo National Championship and won this year’s SCCA ProSolo Finale only a few days prior to Bounds.

The Solo National Championship is the final event for the SCCA Solo National Tour, a national autocross series with stops around the country.  This year’s Solo National Championship drew some 1,200 top amateur racers who competed in various classes, making it the largest motorsports competition in the world.

“We are excited to see that the Proxes R1R has won its second consecutive national championship in SCCA solo competition,” said Stan Chen, manager of events and motorsports, Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp.  “We thank Bill Bounds, Tim Smith and all amateur racers who have made Toyo Tires their choice for solo competition.”

In addition to winning the second consecutive Street Touring class national championship, Toyo Proxes R1R equipped cars swept the top three spots in the Street Touring S (STS) class at this year’s Solo National Championship event.  The Proxes R1R is a 140-UTQG tire which is ideal for enthusiasts who demand the most performance from their tires, whether on the street, at driving schools on the track or in competition.
