Chinese tire tariffs: truth and consequences

Order Reprints

There will be additional tariffs on Chinese consumer tire imports, and they will be strict. But why did President Barack Obama try to "hide" his decision?

With six days to deadline, the president announced his decision to impose duties of 35%, 30% and 25%, respectively, over the next three years. He did so Friday night, lessening the chance for commentary -- perhaps criticism -- from the news media.

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich has commented on what effect high tariffs will have on the tire industry before. You can check out his views in his numerous B.O.B. blogs on the subject.

In his latest blog, he shares some thoughts on the final decision, including the timing of the president's announcement. Read about the latest chapter in the debate over tariffs by clicking on "President Obama announces tariffs in the dark of the night."
