Toyo tires leads championships in solo and off-road

March 17, 2009

Drivers competing on Toyo tires had great results in motorsports this past weekend, with 2008 SCCA Solo National Champion (Street Touring S class) Tim Smith scoring a win in Atlanta, Georgia.  Competing once again on Toyo Proxes R1R extreme performance tires with his 1989 Honda Civic Si, Smith (Tucker, Georgia) won the 2009 season opener for the SCCA Dixie National Tour at South Georgia Motorsports Park over a field of 16-cars.  Second place finisher in Street Touring (ST) was Heyward Wagner (Oakland, California), also competing on Proxes R1R tires.

In the Street Touring Ladies class, Laura White (Atlanta, Georgia) finished in first on Proxes R1R tires with her Honda Civic Si, while Tara Knoll (Danville, Virginia) finished in third on Toyo tires.  Toyo shod cars also finished on the podium in the Street Touring Sport class, Matthew Glagola (Atlanta, Georgia) finishing second, and Christopher Raymond (Atlanta, Georgia) in third.

The Atlanta Solo National event is the first in a 10-race series which travels to various states around the country.  This year’s SCCA Solo National Championship event will be held in September in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Also competing this past weekend in Baja California, Mexico, was Robby Gordon with his Monster Energy / Toyo Tires Chevy Silverado trophy truck equipped with Toyo Open Country M/T-R tires in the 23rd ANNUAL TECATE SCORE San Felipe 250.  Gordon finished second overall in the desert racing event, following up an overall win at the SCORE series season opener at Laughlin, Nevada.  With these consecutive podium finishes, Gordon is well-positioned for his goal of winning the 2009 SCORE desert series championship.

“We congratulate Tim Smith on his winning driving this past weekend, and all of the drivers that scored podiums on Toyo tires,” said Stan Chen, manager of motorsports and events, Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp.  “These great results are just samples of how Toyo tire products can put you in the winner’s circle.”
