Bridgestone Firestone North Amerian Tire LLC (BFNT) is voluntarily recalling 158 Bridgestone brand tires. The recall is expected to begin on or about April 14, 2008.
The tires under recall are Bridgestone V-Steel G-Traction 24R21 truck tires manufactured during the months of March and October in 2007.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the tires fail to conform to the endurance requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 119, "New Pneumatic Tires for Vehicles Other Than Passenger Cars."
"We did the testing and told (NHTSA) 'We want to inform you that we're going to recall these tires,'" says a BFNT spokesman. (The tires were built at BFNT's plant in Bloomington, Ill.)
The purpose of Standard No. 119 is "to provide safe operation performance levels of tires used on motor vehicles with a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of more than 10,000 pounds," according to NHTSA officials.
BFNT says it will notify owners and replace the tires free of charge. "Although we have not received any field complaints on these tires, we are pulling them out of the market and replacing them," says the BFNT spokesman.
