Register by tomorrow for the Department of Defense's Tire Privatization Day

March 1, 2006

The Department of Defense will hold a Tire Privatization Day on March 9 in Columbus, Ohio. "The purpose of this industry day is to discuss establishing a performance-based logistics approach for the supply chain management of tires for the Department of Defense," say government officials.

Under the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 1990, a government recommendation to privatize the distribution, supply and storage of tires became law on Nov. 8, 2005.

"This recommendation disestablishes the wholesale supply, storage and distribution functions for all tires used by the Department of Defense, retaining only the supply contracting function.

"The department will privatize these functions and will rely on private industry for the performance of supply, storage and distribution of (tires)."

By doing so, the department can divest itself of inventories.

"This recommendation is intended to create a more responsive supply support to user organizations and deployment, and the sustainment of forces when deployed worldwide.

"Privatization enables the department to take advantage of the latest technologies, expertise and business practices."

Deadline for registration is Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. EST. To register, contact Kathy Manley at (614) 692-2258 or via e-mail at [email protected].
