American Tire Distributors Inc. has acquired the assets of Edmonton, Alberta-based TriCan Tire Distributors. ATD expects the transaction to close on Nov. 30, 2012.
This purchase marks a significant step for ATD: It is the first time the company has expanded its services beyond the borders of the United States.
“Given the similarities of Canada’s retail structure and leading tire brands, expanding ATD’s footprint and distribution services into Canada represents a natural step for the company’s growth plan,” says William “Bill” Berry, CEO and president of ATD. “After thoroughly evaluating the marketplace, it became clear that TriCan was going to be the best partner for us in Canada.”
TriCan, a division of Triwest Trading (Canada) Ltd., was founded in 1978. It has 15 distribution centers stretching across the country. According to ATD, TriCan's focus on "delivering outstanding customer service" mirrors that of ATD.
ATD will operate TriCan as a standalone business unit. TriCan will retain its company name and its management team, led by Chris Fletcher, president of TriCan since October 2006.

ATD plans to begin expanding TriCan’s existing distribution centers in 2013 to support a broader product screen offering to customers. ATD also plans to add several new distribution centers across Canada by opening Greenfield locations and potentially acquiring other Canadian distributors.
ATD wholesales tires, wheels and related products, plus offers value-added services to tire and automotive service customers in 45 states.
