Trailer orders gain strength in September

Oct. 24, 2012

Net orders for trailers jumped 11% month over month in September, 2012, rising to 16,990 units. That is a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 224,800 units, according to Americas Commercial Trucking (ACT) Research Co.

“With September having four fewer workdays than August, a month-over-month decline in total trailer build was a foregone conclusion,” said Frank Maly, director-CV Transportation with ACT Research.

“However, the real story was the daily production rate, which jumped to the third-best level of 2012. The BL/BU ratio at the end of September was 3.7 months, the lowest level of this recovery. If the normal year-end order flow does not occur, a reduction in production rates will likely be needed in late 2012 or early 2013,” he added.
