Michelin completes Lexington plant expansion

Oct. 12, 2012

Michelin North America Inc. has produced the first tire on its expanded production line at its Lexington, S.C., passenger and light truck tire plant. The tire rolled off the line at 12:12 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2012, and marked a key milestone in the completion of a $200 million investment.

Michelin is the largest manufacturing employer in the state of South Carolina with approximately 8,000 employees. Once fully completed, the Lexington investment will add 270 additional workers to the plant.

“This investment allows us to meet increasing market demands for Michelin tires,” says Peter Sutton, Lexington site manager for Michelin North America. “We are very proud to have begun production, in just over 18 months since the announcement of this project. It is another example that we have the best people in the tire industry.”

This project employs the latest technologies, making this new tire production line amongst the most advanced in the world. The Lexington expansion project is part of a $950 million comprehensive investment committed to the state of South Carolina that will create up to 770 new jobs. In April, Michelin announced it will be expanding its Earthmover facility in Lexington and building a new plant in Anderson County.
