Ford chooses Goodyear for Shelby GT500 -- again

Oct. 11, 2012

Ford Motor Co. has made a long list of improvements to its newest rendition of the iconic Shelby GT500 Mustang. That includes updating the powertrain, brakes, gearing and suspension.

The vehicle will continue to ride on Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar G:2 tires, however.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. recently announced that its ultra-high performance tire was once again selected by Ford as original equipment on the Shelby GT500.

“With every Eagle high performance tire, Goodyear strives to stretch the boundaries of performance and innovation,” says Garth Ely, Goodyear’s director of brand marketing. “So it’s a great feeling of validation when an expert like Ford chooses to equip its flagship high performance model with Goodyear Eagles.”

According to Ford, the 2013 Shelby GT500 features the most powerful production V8 in the world -- a 5.8-liter, supercharged aluminum-block engine capable of producing 662 horsepower. It has a top speed of more than 200 mph.

Goodyear will supply two sizes to Ford for the Mustang: size P265/40ZR19 for the front, and P285/35ZR20 for the rear.

The race-inspired tires have an asymmetric, directional tread design with massive tread blocks on the outboard shoulder help enhance dry cornering grip. Sweeping aquachannel grooves on the inboard side of the tread help enhance wet cornering grip, adds Goodyear.
