Will Amazon.com make Walmart stores obsolete?

April 2, 2012

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is being threatened by Amazon.com. That is the premise of a recent online article by "Businessweek" writer David Welch.

That article compares Amazon.com's business model to Walmart's (yes, the company spells it as one word unless the corporate name is used).

It also reveals how little online market share Walmart has among brick-and-motar retailers. Sears, Holdings Corp., for example, has more than four times the online retail market share Walmart has.

The possible irony of the situation -- dog eats dog, surviving dog gets eaten by a bigger dog -- was not lost on Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich. In his latest blog, he discusses the article, and addresses the possibility of Walmart  selling its Tire & Lube Express outlets.
