Fuel-efficient Michelin tires help new Volvo trucks save energy

Aug. 21, 2002

Michelin North America (MNA) has developed new fuel-efficient energy tires for the Volvo VN truck.

Customers can choose the best drive tire for their vehicle configuration: the new Michelin XDA Energy dual tire or the Michelin X-One XDA wide single tire.

The XDA Energy is a drive-axle tire designed for long wear and fuel savings and is available in a low profile 22.5-inch size. Depending on vehicle configuration, the tire offers 1% to 2% fuel savings vs. other fuel-efficient duals and up to 5% fuel savings vs. existing high-mileage drive duals, says the company.

Michelin X-One XDA wide single tires deliver a 3% savings compared to existing fuel-efficient duals and up to 7% savings vs. high-mileage drive duals, depending on vehicle configuration, says MNA. They come in size 445/50R22.5, which is interchangeable with dual low profile 22.5 tires with hub-piloted assemblies on tandem axles.

All X-One tires have Michelin's patented InfiniCoil technology, a stabilizing belt construction that runs perpendicular to the radial ply to optimize wear and handling, adds MNA. X-One tires also incorporate conventional full-width steel belts and one radial ply for improved responsiveness and handling.
