New Yokohama Port Tire Targets Today's Straddle Carriers

Sept. 17, 2021

Yokohama Off-Highway Tires America Inc. has released its popular Yokohama RR42 IND-4 steel-belted radial in the 480/95R25 size. Capable of loads of up to 37,500 pounds at 15 miles per hour and rated for speeds up to 21.7 miles per hour, the tire targets the new class of straddle carriers.

The Yokohama RR42 IND-4 features carefully positioned, deep circumferential grooves that minimize vibration and reduce tread wear.

"Even after 80 percent of the compound has been worn, the grooves remain, maximizing tire life and performance," say company officials.

The tire also sports smaller grooves for enhanced heat dissipation and operation at high speeds.

Multi-layered, steel-belted construction also optimizes traction, while the tire's extra-sturdy, hexagonal bead helps enhance stability and strength.

"Thousands of straddle carriers are running 24/7, constantly cycling on hot asphalt, so it's an extremely tough application on tires," says Bruce Besancon, vice president, off-the-road sales for Yokohama Off-Highway Tires America.

"And I think we'll see more of the new straddle carrier models that have gone to six tires rather than eight, which means you have fewer tires to carry the same load. That adds to the challenge.

"This fitment reflects our commitment to the port and intermodal sector," adds Besancon.
