PT Gajah Tunggal Voluntarily Recalls 250,620 Touring Tires

Oct. 17, 2016

Giti Tire (USA) Ltd. is involved in the voluntary recall of approximately 250,620 Primewell, Dextero and GT Radial tires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID Number for the recall is 16T017.

The affected tires and sizes, manufactured by Giti's sister company, PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk, in Indonesia, are:

1. Primewell Valera Touring II: 205/65R16 95H, 205/50R17 93V XL, 215/50R17 95V XL, 225/50R17 94V, and 225/50R18 95T.

2. GT Radial Champiro Touring A/S: 205/65R16 95H, 205/50R17 93V XL, 215/50R17 95V XL, 225/50R17 94V, and 225/50R18 95T.

3. Dextero Touring DTR1: 205/50R17 93V XL, 215/50R17 95V XL, and 225/50R17 94V.

Giti says the reason for the recall is an "anomaly" that could lead to a crack in the lower sidewall of the tire. "The crack in the lower sidewall area may appear on the inboard sidewall, making visual detection difficult, and could result in loss of tire air pressure, making the vehicle more difficult to maneuver and potentially unsafe.

“Safety of our customers is our top priority," says William Estupinan, vice president of technical service and compliance for Giti Tire. "Despite the very low number of subject tire claims reported, PT
Gajah Tunggal Tbk has initiated this first voluntary tire recall for the North American market to further the safety of the driving public.”

Giti is in the process of notifying owners, dealers and distributors in North America about the subject tires, and will replace them free of charge. Owners may contact Giti customer service at (877) 342-0882.
