Bridgestone, Dow Introduce Self-Sealing Tire Technology

June 16, 2022

Bridgestone Americas Inc. has teamed with Dow to develop a new, silicone-based tire sealant technology that can be removed after application.

This feature promotes "tire repairability" and potentially extends "the amount of time a tire is in service," according to Bridgestone officials.

The technology, called B-SEALS, will be initially offered to original equipment vehicle manufacturers that "are looking to reduce vehicle weight and improve overall efficiency as more electric vehicles come to market."

"We envision a future where tires are the ultimate enablers of sustainable mobility," says Nizar Trigui, chief technology officer and group president, solutions business, Bridgestone Americas.

"Not only will tires be able to self-seal following a puncture, but we are also developing technologies that will relay real-time tire health information to a driver of fleet manager so they can make more informed vehicle maintenance decisions."

Bridgestone plans to unveil B-SEALS at next week's 2022 Silicone Expo in Detroit, Mich.
