Thomas C. "TC" Johnson, founder of Tyres International Inc., died Sept. 15, 2016. He was 93 years old.
Johnson began his tire career in 1946 with Pennsylvania Rubber after serving as a First Lieutenant in World War II. From there he was employed by Mohawk Rubber Co. for 12 years as vice president of sales.
He founded Tyres International in 1970 and continued there until his retirement in 2000.
Under Johnson’s leadership, Tyres International introduced Ceat, Barum, Matador, Mitas, Tiber, MRF, Belshina Apollo, Matech, Melbourne, and BKT brand passenger, truck, and specialty tire brands to the U.S. market. Its headquarters are in Stow, Ohio, and today the company has three warehouses in Stow; Columbus, Ohio; and Sparks, Nev., delivering tires throughout the U.S.
He grew up in Pittsburgh and was an avid Steelers football fan. Those who knew him say he will be remembered for his creativity, integrity, care for employees, and sense of humor.
