Michelin, Ford settle Texas case

June 6, 2002

Michelin North America Inc. and Ford Motor Co. have settled with plaintiffs in a Texas roll-over accident case.

The case "was settled to our satisfaction," according to a Michelin spokeswoman.

The Michelin tire in question was a 13-year-old Uniroyal brand product that contained improper repairs, she says.

"We're not at liberty to discuss details."

This isn't the first time a tiremaker has been called on the carpet in Texas for a tire's role in an SUV or truck crash.

Last month, a Texas jury ordered Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. to pay nearly $37 million to the family of a man killed when a Kelly tire he was riding on separated and his truck rolled over.

The tire in that case was nine years old and had been repaired several times.
