Ford Introduces Bag-in-a-Box Packaging for Oils and Transmission Fluids

Feb. 5, 2016

Ford Motor Co. has added bag-in-a-box packaging for six oils and two automatic transmission fluids to the Motorcraft product line.

The company says the new packaging will significantly cut down on waste and allow shops to provide greater product selection at competitive pricing.

“Bag-in-a-box gives us the ability to provide customers more options when it comes time to choose their oil or transmission fluid,” says Robert Boss, marketing manager. “Shops will now have the space and the incentive to forgo carrying quarts or jugs of oil in favor of a more streamlined display solution, and in the process offer better pricing for specific products customers seek out.”

Motorcraft’s bag-in-a-box currently features eight part numbers: 5W-20 and 5W-30 semisynthetic oil;   5W-20 and 5W-30 full synthetic oil;10W-30 and 15W-40 diesel engine oil; and Mercon V and Mercon LV. A box provides the equivalent of 24 quarts or six gallons of product – enough for several oil changes.

“Bag-in-a-box is good for business and good for the environment,” says Boss. ”A single bag-in-a-box rack provides eight different product selections and takes up the same valuable floor space as a single 55-gallon drum offering just one type of product. And for shops previously using quarts for each job, bag-in-a-box gives technicians the ability to draw the exact amount needed, dramatically reducing waste.”

With bag-in-a-box, Ford says it is making sure Motorcraft oils are available at the right place at the right time by giving shops streamlined product options at near bulk pricing. Motorcraft oils meet industry specifications as stated by the American Petroleum Institute; any vehicle that calls for GF5 or CJ-4 can use these products, according to Ford.

The company says it will consider adding more part numbers as the new specifications for oils PC11 for diesel and GF 6 for gas engines are released.
