Goodyear Fortera takes top Consumer Reports honors

Oct. 5, 2004

Consumer Reports has rated the Goodyear Fortera HL Edition best overall in tests of 22 different all-season light truck tires.

The Pirelli Scorpion STR A placed second, while the Hankook DynaPro AS RH03 came in third.

Consumer Reports tested size P235/70R16 light truck tires with S and T speed ratings.

"Those tire models are typically found on SUVs and pickups such as the Chevrolet Blazer, Trailblazer and Tahoe; the Ford Explorer and F-150; the Jeep Grand Cherokee; and other top-selling light truck models," say officials from the magazine.

Consumer Report´s tire scores were based on safety-related properties like braking, handling and hydroplaning resistance.

All tires were tested using a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4.

The following are Consumer Report´s "quick picks:"

* Best for most; fine year-round grip: Goodyear Fortera HL Edition; Kelly Safari Signature; and the Dayton Timberline HT.

* If winter driving is not a factor: Pirelli Scorpion STR A; Hankook DynaPro AS RH03; and the Dunlop Radial Rover AT.

* Good choices for all-terrain tires: Dayton Timberline A/T and the Bridgestone Dueler A/T 693.
