Goodyear targets 2005 for super single release

July 15, 2004

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plans to introduce a super single medium truck trailer tire during the first half of 2005 and will follow up with a super single drive tire during the second half of the year.

The tires will be available in size 445/50R22.5, according to Goodyear Technical Marketing Manager Al Cohn.

The drive tire will be called the G392 SSD; the trailer tire will be called the G394 SST.

"We're continuing exhaustive testing on both tires" with the goal of "making sure (their) retreadability is okay."

Retreadability is a vital super single issue, says Cohn.

"In a typical tandem drive tire, for example, most fleets can get two retreads out of that casing. With the super single, you're going to have your work cut out to get one retread" due to super singles' propensity for extra heat build-up.

Goodyear's super singles will be availbale to any Goodyear commercial tire dealership, adds Cohn.

Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire LLC began promoting the availability of its Bridgestone Greatec super single earlier this week.
