Ray Carr Sr. dies

Long-time tire dealer and retreader Ray Carr Sr. has died. He was 90.

Born in Whitmer, W. Va., Carr -- who died on May 25 -- founded Carr's Tire Service, which eventually evolved into Ray Carr Tires Inc.

At one point Ray Carr Tires operated the largest truck tire retread plant in the United States.

Son Ray Carr Jr. took over the dealership in 1968.

Carr Sr. was one of the founding members of the Virginia Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association, which he later served as president, director and in other capacities.

He also was a director with the old National Tire Dealers & Retreaders Association.

He was active in a variety of church and civic organizations as well.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie; Ray Carr Jr. and his wife, Kitty; son Leroy Carr and his wife, Mary Alice; son Everette and wife, Karen; daughter Carolyn Huffman; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Layman; and other relatives.
