Kal Tire begins Sears store conversions

May 28, 2004

Kal Tire is officially taking over four former Sears Canada tire and auto centers this weekend two months after the mass merchandiser announced its exit from the auto aftermarket business.

Kal Tire will take over seven more Sears outlets within two weeks, according to Kal Tire Director of Marketing Tony Milina.

In total, Kal Tire has acquired 11 locations from Sears.

Competitors Active Green & Ross and President Tire have picked up the rest of the 36 outlets divested by Sears. (Sears has closed or will close an additional 13 locations.)

The stores acquired by Kal Tire are located in urban markets, including Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, "which is where we want to increase our penetration," Milina told mtdealer.com after the transaction was announced.

Kal Tire plans to phase out the current tire inventories at the former Sears locations and phase in its own selection.
