Pirelli will sponsor hip hop summit

May 12, 2004

Pirelli Tire North America will sponsor the Detroit Hip Hop Summit on May 22. The summit, being held at the Fox Theatre in Detroit on May 22, is part of a Hip Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) campaign to use hip hop music and culture to effect positive social change in urban communities.

HSAN is a nonprofit and non-partisan organization dedicated to registering two million new voters in 2004 and encouraging registered voters to get out and vote

on Election Day. It is chaired by Russell Simmons and led by former national executive director and CEO of the NAACP, Dr. Ben Chavis.

Pirelli has authorized HSAN to use its "Power is nothing without control" slogan to promote HSAN’s message of taking responsibility and control of one’s social political environment.

Simmons will oversee the summit in Detroit, hosted by Eminem, 50cent, D12, Dr. Chavis

and others.

Guy Mannino, Pirelli Tire North America's CEO and president, will help launch Pirelli’s

"Controlled Driving Campaign" in partnership with HSAN.

The Controlled Driving Campaign encourages young, urban drivers to drive responsibly and safely. As part of the campaign, students from local schools will be taken to race track facilities around the country to be trained in controlled driving techniques by professional racing drivers and celebrities.

"It seemed a logical extension of our

brand to promote the importance of safe and controlled driving to the young urban community," says Mannino.
