Berlin Bandag to buy Malerba's

May 10, 2004

Meriden, Conn.-based Malerba's Silver City Tire Co. Inc. is being sold to Berlin Bandag Inc., a new dealership owned by Bob Berlin, formerly of Tire Centers LLC (TCI).

The transaction is expected to be finalized next week.

Malerba's Silver City Tire, which does business as Malerba's Tyre Man, has locations in Meriden, Manchester and Plainfield, Conn. It also runs a Bandag retread plant.

The outlets will make up the first locations in the new Berlin Bandag venture.

Berlin -- the son of TCI founder Jim Berlin -- most recently worked for TCI as vice president of commercial operations for the Michelin-owned company's Northeast region.

He left TCI last December and began negotiating with Malerba's owner Bob Malerba the following month.

Malerba says he had talked with other potential buyers "but I'm glad it turned out this way."

Malerba, who bought the dealership from his father and company founder G. William Malerba in 1984, will stay on as vice president of operations for Berlin Bandag.

"It's a win-win," he says. "We both have the same vision for the company."

Malerba's is in its 65th year of business.
